AccessibilityAccessibility conventions used on this site
In accordance with our general policy of providing alternative means of navigating this site as prescribed by the World Wide Web Consortium, the conventions described below are used throughout this site. These are primarily designed for use with a text-to-speech reader but will also be helpful for visitors with some impairment of sight.
Please Note:- The main menu on this site is built using javascript, however, if your browser does not support javascript you will be shown a plain HTML menu. The conventions described below apply principally to the HTML version, but they still work even when the javascript version is displayed - just keep an eye on the status bar.
Conventions
1. On all pages the unique content can be immediately accessed by using one TAB followed by the ENTER command. In some browsers the ENTER command may not be necessary as you will be taken directly to the relevant page. This will by-pass all common elements including the main navigation bar. This does not work in the Opera browser.
2. On all pages the principle navigational links can be accessed by using the following combination of keys or commands:-
i) Press ALT + 1 to bring focus to the HOME page link. This can be followed by an ENTER command to access the HOME page or by using successive TABS bring focus to links for the A - Z index, Site Information, Community Directory, Business Directory, Maps, Photographs, the Forum, Site Map and Contact Us.
ii) Press ALT + 2 to bring focus to the COMMUNITY DIRECTORY page link. This can be followed by an ENTER command to access that directory which contains links for sections covering Artists, Children, Clubs and Societies, Community Centres, Education, Health, History, Libraries, Multicultural Resources, Parks, People, Politics, Post Offices, Religion, Social Clubs, Sports, Welfare, What's On and Youth Services.
iii) Press ALT + 3 to bring focus to the BUSINESS DIRECTORY page link. This can be followed by an ENTER command to access that directory which contains links for sections covering Accommodation, Boats, Building, Employment, Finance and Law, Fitness and Beauty, Food and Drink, Motor Trades, Shopping and Transport.
iv) Press ALT + 4 to bring focus to the InPortsmouth search facility. The keywords can be typed in immediately. Press ENTER to initiate the search.
